When fishing in Mildura you should consider the beautiful Apex park which has a large sandbar on the waters edge right in front of the shop and ablution blocks. The sandbar is shaded by massive gum trees in the background which look a real picture.

This sandbar has long been used by anglers, swimmers and families enjoying a days picnicking in the warm sunshine.

If you have never hooked and landed a Murray cod then you are missing one of life's treats, as these massive fish will almost pull your arms off, but what a pleasure it is to win the battle and bring one to shore.

Paddle Steamer on the Murray

I remember when I was a kid in Mildura and heading out fishing with my parents and my little bro.

With 2,900 miles of coastline and 400 miles of the Murray River to explore, there’s never a dull day when fishing in Mildura or a bit west in South Australia.

The day started off somewhat badly because when we were all aboard our tinnie my old man pushed the boat off and my mum who was still standing at the back flew over backwards and went into the water head first and with her legs high above her head, not a view that any young kid wanted to see of his mother, legs in the air and her frilly knickers on display for all to see.

But as the day wore on and the fishing was good so we all forgot the earlier problem and we managed to get 2 Murray cod about 8 lb, 1/2 a dozen Red fin about 2 lbs and 3 or 4 yellow bellied perch up to 4 lbs.

The sand bar at Apex park was used by my friends and I for swimming, having a few beers and trying to score with the girls.

Many times we would fish off the bank at Apex or a bit down or upstream and then BBQ our catch of fish.

Catching them: Use these -

  • Bait
  • Shrimp and worm cocktail, yabbies
  • Lures
  • Dark colour lipless crankbaits and 1/4 oz spinnerbaits with gold blades and maybe you could try soft plastics, The Aeroplane spinner large Sway Back, Floppy and Flatfish patterned models as I have caught a few golden perch and red fin with softies and they love them.
  • Hook sizes: 1/0 to 8/0
  • Fishing line
  • with a breaking strain of 40 to 50 lbs.

The Murray Cod Grows to 1.8 metres and up to 113kg in weight.

Many bigger cod were caught in earlier days in right up to 200lbs weight.

In fact it has been reported that one cod of 250lbs weight was caught way back when, but the report was never substantiated. Must have looked like a real a real monster.

The ideal size of a story is 300 words but that is a big ask for those who do not write for a living so if folks write stories of 100 or 200 words I can combine them into 1 story provided I am given 2 first names to credit the stories too.

This wonderful Murray cod was caught by Codman using a lure in fast running water in an upland river
